Reading & Phonics
In 2016 we adopted the Letters and Sounds phonics teaching methods and daily phonics sessions take place in the first three classes.
In addition to this, the methods learnt through the Letters and Sounds training are applied with groups of older children who are still developing their reading skills.
Further information on the Letters and Sounds Phonics approach can be found on their website.
We do not adhere to any one 'Reading Scheme' to encourage children to develop their reading skills. Instead, we draw upon a wide range of existing schemes and supplement these with a wide range of reading books. We believe strongly that children who are enjoying their reading will develop more quickly and as such feel it is vital that we provide as wide a range of stimulus books as possible. We encourage parents to help their children find books they will enjoy and want to share rather than become concerned about what 'colour' book they are on.
To further engender a love of reading we celebrate World Book Day with the children each year, and take the opportunity to share the books that we all enjoy.
